Spring Cleaning | What Spring Means for Professional Floor Care?
With the weather starting to warm up and the threat of snow hopefully behind us, it’s time think of Spring and what Spring means for floor care. The term “Spring Cleaning” has been around as long as I can remember, and I guess, there is no better time but now. It is best to start with the outside of your building and the front lobby must be checked first. This is the image you are putting out there for not just your customers, but your employees as well. Your image says it all, and opinions are established frequently before any guest is ever greeted by one of your staff. You’ve got to have your floors looking excellent, and an excellent professional floor care program with excellent floor care products is the only answer.
Also, start with any landscaping that might need to be done. If flower beds must be cleaned, I am sure you can hire an outside landscaper, or frequently, an employee might love the overtime. Clean any residue left behind from the snow and salt that might be still engrained into the payment. Clean all windows with a good non-streaking glass cleaner and wipe out all windowsills. Again, excellent industrial cleaning products are a must.
If you have mats, have they been cleaned lately, or possibly, is it time to replace them? Ask your rental company if you have one, or ask me for a reference! They are there to remove soil and moisture from your customers’ shoes and need to be checked as well. These small things make big impressions!
Next, when it comes to the floor, it might be the perfect time to strip and wax. This needs to be done during downtime because it would interfere with traffic if done while you are open. The key to doing this during the Spring is to have all the necessary supplies on-hand before you start. You should stage it out the day before because I have seen many accounts where the job is half done and then you’re suddenly looking for something like the extension cord for the shop vac! This job should never have been done if not planned out well in advance. If you need a checklist, please email me, and I will send you one. Professional floor care programs are complex, and you need to make sure you’re well taken care of.
For wax, I would use one with the newer interlocking polymers and the built-in sealer. That should save a step, and with just 18% solids, it can last a long time if maintained correctly.
If you have carpeting and do the job yourself, it might be good to pretreat. You normally can do this by adding some of your carpet extraction shampoos with some water into a sprayer and slightly dampen beforehand to loosen up some of the soil. Good professional carpet shampoo is a must!
